Biathlon is a combination sport where individuals race along level, snow-covered tracks using skis (cross-country skiing), as well as stopping to shoot at designated targets using guns. The cross-country skiing is broken up by either two or four shooting portions. Participants must shoot standing for half and from a prone position for the other half. Poor shooting performance results in penalties, such as having extra time added, or having to ski an extra penalty loop. The winner completes the track first.
